The Anagama Collection was created specifically for firing in an anagama (cave kiln). This special wood firing process takes several days to get up to temperature. The wood fire is constantly stoked for about 48 hours, requiring multiple people working in shifts to maintain and raise the temperature inside of the kiln. The kiln is then allowed to cool for a full week before being unloaded. The loading and unloading processes each take several hours.
As the wood at the front of the kiln burns, ash is created and flies through to the back of the kiln, landing on pieces of pottery along the way. A reduction atmosphere is achieved. The combination of varied clay bodies, special glazes, high temperatures (some parts of the kiln reach 2500 F or more), and the unpredictability of where the ash will land and melt can yield spectacular results.
